Common sage makes a superb aromatic and a poor oil to be vague about. We distil it ourselves and we tell you what is in it.
Sage is one of the great culinary herbs and one of the more demanding essential oils, and most sellers simply skip the second half of that sentence.
Distilled sage leaf concentrates thujone, a constituent that deserves respect and a clear label. The usual approach in this trade is to say nothing at all and let the buyer assume it behaves like lavender. It does not.
Our position is the opposite. We distil Salvia officinalis from organic Mediterranean leaf in our own still, we have it analysed by an outside laboratory, and we put the safety information where you cannot miss it.
Sage has been grown around the Mediterranean for thousands of years, and it makes its best oil where the soil is poor and the summer is dry. Comfortable growing conditions produce a bigger plant and a duller aroma.
We take the leaf. Sage is cut before the plant runs to flower, when the foliage is dense and the aromatic oil is concentrated in it.
Those silvery leaves are covered in fine hairs that hold the oil close to the surface, which is why sage smells so strongly when you brush past it and why handling the cut crop gently matters.
We claim nothing medicinal for it, and we are going to be direct about the cautions instead. Sage oil is high in thujone and is not an oil for casual, generous use.
Keep the dilution low, avoid it entirely during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, and do not use it on or around children. If you have a seizure disorder, leave this oil alone. Diffusing needs a lighter hand than you would use with a mint or a citrus.
If a batch does not analyse the way sage should, it does not get bottled. We would rather be out of stock than ship a sage oil we cannot describe accurately.
The still is ours. Taking delivery of finished sage oil would mean trusting a stranger on both species and composition, and composition is the part that carries consequences.
Steam moves through the packed leaf, the aromatics rise with it, and the oil separates as the vapour condenses. Nothing about the method is unusual; the care is in the material going in and the honesty about what comes out.
We run to completion rather than to a stopwatch, and then send the batch away to be measured.
An independent laboratory analyses every batch, and with this oil the analysis is a safety document as much as a quality one.
Measured for every batch rather than estimated, because the correct usage advice depends on the number.
The rest of the sage signature, and a check that this is officinalis rather than a related Salvia.
Confirms a single species, undiluted, with nothing blended in from cheaper herb oils.
We will send the composition sheet for any lot you name. Reach us on the contact page.
Still date, fill date and lot number, printed on the label rather than stickered on.
Amber from the smallest bottle up to bulk containers.
100% Salvia officinalis, undiluted, nothing added on the way in.
Organic Mediterranean leaf, cut before flowering, distilled in our own still, with thujone measured and published for every batch.
Read the analysis before you buy.
